UPDATE: School in Norwalk has been canceled for Wednesday because of the storm.
Superintendent Susan Marks will be up at 4 a.m. Wednesday consulting with other Fairfield County superintendents about whether to close schools. A major snowstorm is expected by then, with a foot of snow predicted. Assistant Superintendent Tony Daddona will also be awake, making calls to city officials, including the public works department. By 5:30 a.m. a decision about school closings will be made.
Obviously, safety is my primary concern, says Marks. I am also trying to make a decision that I wont have to change in the middle of the day.
The snow day information is shared with TV and radio stations. Robert Polselli, IT Director, puts a message on the website and sends out phone alerts to parents. He says a project was under way to make sure the messenger system had parents most recent contact information, however it has been delayed due to budget cuts. Marks is also in close contact with Director of Transportation Johanna Garcia who interfaces with the bus companies.
While the first big snow storm landed during winter vacation, the second storm caused a two-hour early dismissal for Norwalk school last Friday. So far this school year, there have been no makeup days because early dismissals dont need to be made up. But the winter is hardly over.
Parents and teachers fear a repeat of last year when the official last day of school was pushed back to June 29 because the district had to make up six snow days.
Are you worried that snow days will lengthen the school year?
