[updated 6/14] You have another opportunity to speak up about next year's school budget at Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting. The special meeting, set for 7:45 p.m. in the City Hall Concert Hall, was scheduled especially to focus on next year's budget.
School board Chairman Jack Chiaramonte says the purpose is for the board to review the budget. "We have to go through the cuts and see what we can agree on," he said. Although the agenda says, "Discussion and Possible Action 2010-11 Budget Reconciliation," Chiaramonte says that it is unlikely that any vote will be taken on the budget Tuesday.
Finance Committee Chairman Steve Colarossi said he's planning to present an "alternative budget plan" that "lessens the impact of cuts on elementary schools." The current proposed budget eliminates elementary intervention aides, some first grade aides, half of the library aides and two elementary assistant principals. Colarossi says the burden "shifts more toward Central Office" in his plan.
The board must find $4.6 million in cuts to reconcile its $155 million for next year. Although months of discussions have taken place, the final cuts have yet to be determined. Tuesday night's meeting will likely give the public a better understanding of which staff and programs the district plans to eliminate.
