The grant will be used to support a part-time mentoring position for the Connecticut College Access and Success program, a state-funded initiative that helps students transition from high school to college.

ConnCAS provides a wide variety of support services for students who face barriers to academic success, with offerings such as one-on-one advising, peer support, personal enrichment and free summer courses.

First Niagara Foundation’s grant was given to NCCF through its Mentoring Matters initiative.

“The Mentoring Matters donation from the First Niagara Foundation will allow the freshman students who sign up for ConnCAS voluntarily to receive mentoring from college graduates and successful members of the business community," said Ann Rogers, executive director of the NCCF. "With face-to-face meetings twice a month, they will learn to set goals, become involved in activities that relate to their passions, advocate for themselves academically and prepare for careers that leverage their interests and abilities.”

“First Niagara believes in the value of a good education and is thrilled to support ConnCAS’ mission of helping students reach their higher education goals,” said Robert Cerminaro, senior vice president and market executive of Corporate Banking for First Niagara’s Tri-State Region. “A supportive mentor, no matter how old you are, can have a lasting, positive effect on someone’s life and we are proud to contribute to this important program.”
