Norwalk's Maritime Aquarium Invites Teachers To Fish School

NORWALK, Conn. -- Teachers who want to learn how to incorporate aquatic sciences into their lessons are invited to an open house dubbed the Fish School at the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9.

Teachers will have the aquarium to themselves -- no spouses, children or friends are allowed. Teachers can explore the aquarium’s permanent and special exhibits and also preview IMAX movies.

“The Maritime Aquarium has so much to offer educators in bringing to life their lessons in environmental education, animal adaptations, ecosystems and other science curricula,” Jamie Alonzo, the aquarium’s education director, said in a statement. “The programs offered in the aquarium’s classrooms, and in our traveling teacher programs, field programs and study cruises, all fulfill Connecticut, New York and New Jersey science standards.

"The April 9 evening is a free chance for teachers to learn all the many ways they can use the aquarium to their students’ advantage.”

Stations staffed by Aquarium educators will explain and demonstrate the standards-based programs available for students in pre-K through high school. Teachers who attend also can network with fellow educators and enjoy a light dinner.

The “Fish School” open house also includes screenings of one of the newest IMAX films, “The Last Reef: Cities Beneath the Sea” at 5:30 p.m., and of an upcoming film, “Tornado Alley,” at 7 p.m.

Advance reservations are required. Each teacher must register with name, grade taught or position, full school name and address, preferred phone and email contact, and preference for IMAX movie showing. Email to reservations@MaritimeAquarium.org or call 203-852-0700, Ext. 2206.
