Last Day of School Set for June 29

Get ready for a long June. Interim Superintendent Michael Nast says the last day for Norwalk schools will be June 29 for students and June 30 for teachers. Elementary and middle school students will have half days on the final three days of classes. High school students will have half days on the last five days during which many students will have exams. Norwalk High School graduation ceremonies will take place on June 28 and Brien McMahon will hold their convocation on June 29, according to assistant superintendent Tony Daddona.

Blame the bad weather for the longer school year. State law requires students to attend school for 180 days and Norwalk schools were closed for five days following the wind storm in March as well as two snow days this year. School officials decided not cancel the April break, which starts on Monday, because many parents and staff already had plans and officials thought it was too late to make changes to the schedule.

Mayor Richard Moccia had sent a letter to the State Commissioner of Education days after the March storm requesting a waiver that would have allowed a shorter school year. Interim Superintendent Michael Nast did not act immediately but said he waited to consult with the Board.  At Tuesday night’s board of education meeting, school board members decided not to ask for a waiver. Other school districts in the area had not received waivers and board members thought it was unlikely Norwalk would obtain one.

“Parents really want to know when the school year will end,” said BOE member Jodi Bishop-Pullan.
