Kids Join Fight Against Obesity

Students enrolled in the Fit Kids afterschool program challenged one another in the 2010 Fit Kids Olympics held on Friday at Fox Run Elementary School. Mayor Richard Moccia and Miss Black Connecticut, Osas Ighodaro, congratulated the 75 students who had completed the eight-week course at Fox Run and Tracey Elementary Schools. Norwalk High School students who are members of B.R.O.W.N., Bears Reaching Out Within Norwalk, organized the event for the younger children.

Fit Kids helps fight childhood obesity by teaching students new and enjoyable ways to increase their physical activity and teaching them about proper nutrition. In Norwalk, 48 percent of the sixth-graders are either obese or at risk of becoming obese. Childhood obesity has been shown to contribute to chronic health problems in later years. The Fit Kids program is a partnership among the YMCA, the Norwalk Department of Health and the exercise science programs of Sacred Heart University and Norwalk Community College.
