The Helen Gander Friends Nursery School of Wilton hosted families from all over Fairfield County Saturday for the Quaker school's second annual Free Family Fun Day Open House.
"We wanted to open the doors of the Friends Nursery School and bring families together in celebration of peace, nature and community," Maureen Jackson, the director of the Quaker-sponsored school, said in a press release.
There were interactive events for children, which Jackson said reflect the "experiential learning" style of the school. The children got to participate in a drum circle led by Sound of Afrika, yoga with Amy Ferrero, and other arts and crafts.
The school operates under the care of the Wilton Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends and teaches students applying Quaker principles of community, equality, integrity, peace and simplicity. The Society of Friends has traditionally been interested in developing each child to the fullest of his or her potential.
"We wanted to demonstrate that we place a strong emphasis on play-based and child-centered learning, where the journey -- a process of exploration -- is the means to an end, and the product is secondary," Jackson said.
The school is located in the Silvermine section of Wilton. It was founded in 1957 and welcomes students from Wilton, New Canaan, Norwalk, Ridgefield and Weston. The pre-school offers programs for children ages 2 through 4.
