BOE Ready to Hire New Sup Tonight

The Norwalk Board of Education is slated to approve the appointment of  Dr. Susan Marks as the new Superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools at its meeting tonight.  Marks is currently the Associate Superintendent for Human Resources for the public schools in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Marks emerged as the BOE’s finalist last month and came to Norwalk to meet the community over two days. She attended a public forum and answered questions. The next day she met with teachers, administrators and other community groups.  Recently, a delegation consisting of two BOE members, a parent, a teacher and a principal also visited Marks in Rockville, Maryland, to observe her in an orchestrated site visit.

Marks’ impending appointment comes 10 months after the departure of Sal Corda, the previous Superintendent.  The BOE decided not to renew Corda's contract, which was set to expire this year. After the BOE’s decision, Corda resigned.  Since then, Norwalk has had two interim-Superintendents. The first was Bill Papallo, a retired Superintendent who worked from August to this February. He has been replaced by Michael Nast, also a retired Superintendent from Stamford, who will remain until the end of the school year.

If Marks’ selection is approved by the BOE, a contract with her will have to be negotiated. Before he left, Corda’s salary for 2008 was $252,140 – the highest in the city.  If she is appointed, Marks will be Norwalk’s first female Superintendent.
