Dr. Asini Gunawardan, staff psychiatrist for outpatient services at St. Vincent's Behavioral Health Service and Hall-Brooke Behavioral Health Services, gives a noon talk at the Westport Library on May 13, on bipolar disorder in children and adolescents. Her talk will describe the signs and symptoms to watch for in children vs. adolescents, what the treatment options are and what resources are available. She will also offer tips and strategies for the affected individuals as well as family members.
The Mayo Clinic describes bipolar disorder as causing "mood swings that range from the lows of depression to the highs of mania." The Clinic notes that although the disorder is "a disruptive, long-term condition," generally, moods can be managed with a treatment plan that includes medications and psychological counseling. For more information, call (203) 341-4532 or e-mail rmettlen@stvincents.org. Dr. Gunawardan's talk is free and reservations are not required.
