With a combined 70 (!) years of real estate experience, William Pitt/Sotheby's Tom Shrum and Patsy Brescia know all about market ups and downs. "We've experienced some major swings," says Patsy. "Each one is different. This one is deep. It's not just a dip, it's a major adjustment. Our take on it is that it'll be flat for the next few years."
They know all about Norwalk, too. A Connecticut native and UCONN grad, Patsy raised three children here and now has grandchildren in the Norwalk public school system; she also spent six years on the City Council and even ran for mayor in the 1970's. She opened William Pitt's Norwalk office in 1980. Tom, who hails from Ohio, has 15 years of area living under his belt. He and Patsy began working together as a team over a decade ago.
"When we started working in that manner, the team concept was relatively new in this part of the country," says Patsy.
"We feel it gives the top level of service to our clients - by working together, we can interface and be available to our clients when they need responses."
Thanks to the aforementioned "major" market adjustment, Patsy and Tom are finding that their clients need more than prompt responses these days. Sometimes, they need a shoulder to cry on.
"It's affecting so many people very deeply," says Patsy. "They're trying to downsize, but if you downsize, you have to sell, and that's the challenge. We do a lot of problem-solving. Our business is incredibly hands-on. There are a lot of minor emergencies that need to be dealt with...it's a complicated job, multi-faceted. Most people don't think of it that way, but you really need expertise on a lot of different levels.
"Patsy says that she and Tom put an equal amount of effort into developing client relationships. Other responsibilities are split up according to preference and/or skill. Tom is "wonderful" at marketing and a computer whiz; Patsy oversees and handles most of the administrative duties. It's this "synergism," Patsy feels, that gives the team approach an edge. "It allows us to plan our time better."
