Those Framed Photos Will Have to Go

Homeowners getting their house ready for sale often have a hard time deciding what to do with all their framed family photos. The answer is very simple. PACK THEM AWAY.

Buyers walking into a house have to be able to imagine living there. Let them focus on the “bones” of the house and on how their furniture will fit into the rooms. Houses that sell quickly are staged to look as neutral as possible, devoid of personal items. And that includes photographs of your life.

Family photographs are a major distraction for buyers. Instead of paying attention to the house the potential buyer takes away visual images of your kids and family vacations, and that is not what you want.

Here are some tips to help you get the photos off the piano and down from the walls.

* Decide if you'll be displaying these photos in your new home. Are you downsizing? Will you have room for all these frames?

* If the answer is yes, dust each frame, wrap in paper and put in a box. Label each box with the contents.

* If you aren’t going to display the photos, remove them from the frames and pop them into a photo album.

* Do you want to keep the frames for new photos? If not sell them on eBay or take them to your local thrift shop.

* Buy a large portfolio binder at an art supply store for those large photos hanging on the walls. Jerry’s Artarama on Main Avenue in Norwalk has a good selection.

It’s nice to have family photos displayed around the house, but do you actually look at them? I’d love to know. Write me at fpearson@mainstreetconnect.us
