Realtors See Red

The real estate industry isn't all about profit - at least not tomorrow. For Keller Williams Realty associates, May 13 is RED Day, a service initiative which aims to benefit local communities. All realtors in the United States and Canada are asked to reserve the day for volunteer work.

"This is a very unusual company," says Maureen Vita, a broker at Keller Williams' Norwalk office. "They're really into helping others give back. And it's not just about volunteering once, it's about hoping people will experience the good feeling of helping people and want to do it again."

This year, Maureen and her co-workers have teamed up with the Norwalk Housing Authority to improve the grounds of Washington Village public housing complex in SoNo.

"We'll spend the day there, weeding out flower beds and just sprucing things up in general," says Maureen. About eight Keller Williams team members total will be involved, all of them wearing shirts that read "RED Day: Give Where You Live." Afterwards, they'll join realtors from surrounding offices for a party in White Plains.

Maureen, who's been with the company since October, is thrilled to be a part of something bigger than just buying and selling properties. Another program she's proud of is Keller Williams Cares, an employee-created fund used to help associates who've fallen on hard times.

"After Hurricane Katrina, for example, a lot of our brokers down there lost their homes, lost everything," says Maureen. "Thanks to Keller Williams Cares, we were able to help them get back on their feet."
