Linda Kennedy has no plans to retire any time soon, despite the fact that she will, in fact, retire in the next couple of years. Im not one to sit at home watching TV, she says. I like to be busy.
Linda has planned for her retirement as a paralegal in Stamford by starting a new career in real estate. I grew up with houses: my father was a builder in Stamford, she says. Shes also done quite a bit of construction herself, working as a general contractor for a project in Darien and building two houses. She calls herself a Jack-of-all-trades and is proud of the fact that she can put up sheetrock, lay tile and wood flooring and do electrical work. I dont do plumbing, she says.
Two years ago Linda decided to study for her real estate license. When she signed up for classes she was dismayed to discover that all the other students were her sons age. That fact made her determined to pass the exam. An online advertisement for a job at Weichert Realtors caught her eye and she applied for a job. I loved the fact that Weichert has a fast track program that exposes you to what you need to know in the business, she says. Theres a big learning curve.
Its a good thing that Linda enjoys being busy because between her two jobs she has no free time. She still works full time as a paralegal during the week, and now shes a real estate agent on the weekends. I think I have an advantage because of my construction background, says Linda. I know about moldings. I can talk to clients about how a house is built. She's looking forward to doing a lot more talking to clients when she's a retired paralegal -- and a full time real estate agent.
