Midwesterner Transforms to Stamford Booster

Tammy Felenstein has lived in Stamford since 1990 and is a huge fan of the city. “I used to work in fashion,” she says. “I was a buyer for several department stores, including Belk, which is a big chain in the south.” And when you’re in the fashion business, sooner or later that means moving to New York City. “I’m a Midwestern girl from Peoria, Illinois, and the thought of living in Manhattan was terrifying. I couldn’t bear not to have a car,” she adds.

Tammy did her research and discovered Stamford was much like her home town, a small city that offered everything she wanted. She even found her husband in Stamford. Tammy met Brad Felenstein in her condo elevator.

Tammy’s next job, with Kids R Us, had her commuting to Paramus, New Jersey, as well as traveling overseas. She then found herself juggling a job and a baby, and she was pregnant was pregnant with her second child when she had a revelation. “It was incredibly stressful. I started looking for a job that would give me the opportunity to have a career, use my financial skils and give me flexible time,” she says. Real estate provided the perfect solution.

Today, Tammy is president of the Stamford Board of Realtors, a two-year commitment. “We have about 800 realtors in Stamford and we provide support and education through speaker programs and continuing education credits,” she says. The talk of the town these days is the development of Harbor Point, the 80 acre parcel south of the train tracks. New office buildings, as well as 4,000 residential units are springing up on the site of old warehouses. New York City's Fairway supermarket, a new addition that anchors the development, is a must-visit.

Tammy says homes are starting to sell in Stamford. “2011 is the year we’ll see a turnaround in consumer confidence,” she continues. She sells homes mostly in Stamford because it's where she knows and loves. “The beauty of Stamford is the fact that it is diverse,” she adds, “And we have an excellent school district. Both Laura and Grant, my kids, are in Stamford schools. I’m a very strong supporter of our public schools.”
