House Sales Stay Steady

I’m confused. This week, news reports told us that house sales are rising. Last week, the same reports told us that house sales were in the tank.  Where is this information coming from?  Are they making it up?  Sounds like a coin toss system of reporting to me.  “OK, folks, how about we do sales are up if it’s heads and…..”

So what do the brokers in Fairfield County have to say about house sales right now?  Everyone seems cautiously optimistic. Houses that are priced to sell are selling.  “The number of houses sold in Greenwich has doubled this year compared to 2009,” says Gloria Marwell of Prudential.

Barbara Hickey of William Pitt/Sotheby in Stamford adds, “August has been quiet, as we expect it to be, but I am confident that after Labor Day we’ll see six to eight weeks of steady selling before the holidays. Sales are rising in Stamford, even though prices are staying flat."

Rentals are moving well in Wilton, and houses priced below $1.3 million are selling, according to Pam Cole of Realty Seven in Wilton.  “People who want to get into Wilton are buying,” she says, “And the houses that are selling are those that are priced right.”

Darien and Westport realtors are keeping busy with buyers looking to move from New York City. “In Darien we used to have a lot of in-town moves, but now we’re seeing an upsurge of young families moving out of the city,” says Maggie Marchesi of Kelly Associates in Darien.
