Glimpse Unique Modern Homes on Fairfield County Architectural Tour

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - It is not your typical Sunday afternoon house tour of New Canaan – or of any other New England town, for that matter.

Sunday is the third annual modern house tour, which celebrates the town’s incomparable status of having among the world’s most important collections of homes designed by world famous architects.

The tour, which runs from 1 to 5 p.m., will feature homes designed by the “Harvard Five” architects. Six of the homes are in New Canaan; two are located in Darien and there is one in Wilton.

Said William Pitt’s Rita Kirby: “It’s an opportunity to witness some of the finest examples in the world of mid-century, modern architecture by some of the most renowned contemporary architects.”

Among the highlights on the tour is a home designed by Philip Johnson, as well as two that were designed by another “Harvard Five” architect, John Johansen, whose “Bridge House” is a noted entrant. Bridge House is unique in that it actually straddles a river (the Rippowam).

Each of the homes represents a diversity of style, and all adhere in some form to modernist architectural principles in terms of using glass walls to blend indoor and outdoor landscapes.

“The tour is a living museum of unique architecture,” said Kirby.
