Give Your Home a Fresh Lick of Paint

Any real estate agent will tell you that a fresh coat of paint is one of the smartest investments you can make if you want to sell your house quickly. Here are some tips to help you decide if and what you should paint.

*  If you’ve lived in this house for more than seven years without repainting, then it’s time to get out the drop cloths and paint cans.

*  Choose neutral paint colors that will appeal to everyone. If you need help, call an interior designer for a color consultation. You’ll pay an hourly fee but it will be well worth it to have an expert pick the right colors. Taupes, warm grays and beiges are all good choices. Stick to white for the trim.

*  If your walls are covered with pictures and photos, this is a good time to start packing them away in boxes. Save all the picture hooks and nails for your next house. Patch the nail holes.

*  Eyeball the ceilings. If there are any cracks or you can see sheetrock joints, tape and patch them. You’ll need to paint the whole ceiling.

*  Corridors tend to get beaten up so fill in any dings with compound then sand and prime the spots. You should repaint all the common areas to make the house look and feel fresh.

*  Kids’ bedrooms will need new paint especially if the teens have covered the walls with posters. You’ll probably have a lot of patching, sanding and priming before you paint.

*  How does your front door look? Remember, this is the first impression a buyer will have of your house, so make sure your front door has a perfect and shiny coat of paint.
