Brokers Rally at State Capitol for Realtors Day

Hundred of Realtors convened in Hartford to make their voices heard at Realtors Day, an annual event that has taken place for more than 27 years.

The Realtors gathered last week at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts for an issues briefing session. Later, they crossed the street and met with State Senators and Representatives at the Legislative Office Building to let lawmakers know their views on issues affecting their business. The events were sponsored by the Connecticut Association of Realtors.

Realtor Brad Kimmelman, brokerage manager of the Fairfield and Southport offices of William Pitt Sotheby's International Realty, attended for his second consecutive time. Kimmelman, who lives on the Norwalk/Westport boarder, has been involved in real estate since 1986 and has worked with William Pitt Sotheby's since 2009.

Realtors Day, says Kimmelman, “Rallies the troops and lets lawmakers know that we are strong and interested in protecting homeownership and our clients’ interests.”

“As a manager, it is important for me to know these issues,” Kimmelman says. He adds that Realtors Day “helps to get many agents informed and active by getting them involved.”

He says it is important to those in his industry to make sure the important issues – those that help the real estate industry thrive – are addressed and heard by state legislators.

The topics addressed during Realtors Day included: protecting real estate license laws; prohibiting private transfer fees; fostering smart real estate growth; modernizing foreclosure sales and promoting affordable health insurance for independent contractors and small businesses.

Kimmelman says Realtors Day had a positive impact on him and many of his colleagues. “It was an opportunity to get our concerns addressed, and allowed us to be unified as real estate professionals. It was empowering.”
