Agent Loves to Travel. Next Stop: India

It’s hardly surprising that Marion Filley loves exploring the world. Her first overseas adventure was to Switzerland and she was only in the sixth grade. “My mother’s attitude was that you couldn’t learn a foreign language unless you lived in the country, so she sent me to boarding school near Lake Geneva for two years. That’s where I learned French,” she says. “I went back to Switzerland for my last two years of high school, this time to Gstad. We used to ski six days a week!”

Marion returned home for college and lived in a rent stabilized apartment overlooking Central Park with her husband Patrick for several years before venturing into the real estate market – as a buyer. “I knew nothing about buying property and had to rely on the broker, which made me very uncomfortable.  I’m the sort of person who needs to understand precisely what I’m doing,” she continues.

That attention to detail is what led Marion to Wilton. With three daughters in private school in Manhattan, the Filleys came to the conclusion that it was time to move to the suburbs. She contacted all the Boards of Education in Fairfield County and asked for the district test scores, then visited the best-performing towns. They settled on Wilton, one of the top three districts.

As her girls grew, Marion decided it was time to get back to work, and in 1989 she got her real estate license. Today, she is one of Prudential’s top producers, as well as a grandmother of three.

“After all these years I still enjoy the excitement of my job,” she says. “I love meeting new people, I love watching them fall in love with a new house.”  Recently, though, her job has been made considerably more difficult by the consternation of some homeowners, especially those who bought their homes over the past seven years, who have seen their investment lose value. "It's very hard to tell someone that his house, his investment, is not worth what he thought," she says.

Marion is able to keep her energy and focus alive by taking some amazing trips. “I travel with a fun group of girlfriends,” she says. “We’re exploring the Far East. Last year we went to Singapore and Vietnam. The year before it was Myanmar – lovely people.  This year, we’re off to India.”
