"I feel great," McKinney said. "I think in the last 10 days, two weeks, we've executed our plan exactly as we had hoped. I believe the race is extremely close, and between now and 8 o'clock tomorrow I'm just going to focus on making sure all the people we've identified that want to vote for me come out to vote."
As a Fairfield resident, McKinney says he hopes the hometown turnout could be the votes that push him to victory.
"I'm hoping that turnout will be higher in Fairfield than" in other places across the state, McKinney said of his hometown.
The current state senator is neck-and-neck with opponent Tom Foley of Greenwich, according to a Gravis Marketing poll taken earlier this month.
In the combined Internet and phone survey, participants were asked: "If the election for Governor were held today and the candidates were Republican Tom Foley/John McKinney and Democrat Dan Malloy, whom would you vote for?"
In both cases, Foley got 46 percent of the vote and McKinney came out with 45 percent. Malloy scored only 38 percent in both cases.
When asked whether he is the candidate to beat Malloy, McKinney said: "I believe I am, and I know I am."
"It is going to be a challenge to take out Malloy," McKinney said. "I admire how much he works and how hard he works. We need to match his energy if not surpass it."
When asked whether he had a preferred outcome in Tuesday's primary, Malloy told reporters Monday during a stop in Fairfield, "A Republican is a Republican."
