NORWALK, Conn. Two elderly motorists were taken to Norwalk Hospital Friday afternoon after their SUV hit a tree on the Merritt Parkway, the Norwalk Fire Department reports.
The accident occurred at about 1:35 p.m. between the exit and entrance ramps of Exit 38, Deputy Chief Edward Prescott said in a statement. The northbound Lexus SUV struck a 30-foot tree, knocking it down as the vehicle flipped and rolled. The SUV came to rest on its side against the fallen tree.
The two occupants were assisted from their vehicle by passing motorists and were being attended by a nurse and EMT when emergency crews arrived, Prescott said. Norwalk firefighters and Norwalk Hospital paramedics boarded and collared the elderly man and woman, who were both conscious and speaking with paramedics.
The couple's pet dog appeared uninjured and was transported by Norwalk Police Department Animal Control Officers, Prescott said.
Parkway traffic slowed to a crawl and the entrance ramp was closed by Norwalk police until the victims were transported to the hospital and the vehicle removed. DOT crews responded to clear the downed tree from the side of the road. The scene was cleared by 2:20 pm. State Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
