Officers on patrol in South Norwalk witnessed a hand-to-hand transaction between a known drug sales suspect and the driver of a dump truck on South Main Street near Grove Street at about 2 a.m. Monday, police said. The truck had been parked illegally during the transaction, so police performed a traffic stop on South Main, according to the police report.
The driver stopped for the marked police car, but as an officer approached his window, he drove away, nearly striking the officer, police said. Police then followed him through Norwalk to Rowayton and eventually Darien, where he got onto Interstate 95 South, police said.
Officers continued to follow the truck, at speeds no faster than 50 mph, according to police reports. The driver avoided a spike strip on the highway near Exit 5 in Greenwich and briefly got off the highway in Greenwich, police said.
He eventually stopped near Exit 19 in Rye, N.Y., where he was arrested after a struggle with officers, according to the police report. No drugs were found on the scene, police said.
The driver, William Garcia, 37 of Fairfield Avenue, was charged with engaging police in pursuit, attempted assault on a police officer, reckless driving, interfering with police, failure to stop for a stop sign and improper parking. His bond was set at $25,000, and he is due in court on Dec. 27.
