NORWALK, Conn. A Norwalk man who said he had been collecting cans after a witness saw him going through the back of a pickup truck early Monday was arrested after Norwalk police found numerous burglary tools in a bag he was carrying, Sgt. Lisa Cotto said. Michael Schanck, 50, of 23 Ivy Place said he used the bolt cutter to help him in his can search, but could not explain how.
Police received a 2:54 a.m. call of a motor vehicle burglary in progress in a parking lot at 160 West Cedar St., Cotto said. Schanck, who was pushing a shopping cart up the road, matched the description and said he had been in the yard looking for cans. There was a black camera bag in his cart, in which police found several flashlights, a bolt cutter, two pairs of gloves, three screwdrivers, a razor-knife, two shoe covers and bungee cords, Cotto said.
Schanck was charged with third-degree burglary, a felony, criminal trespass and possession of burglars tools, both misdemeanors, and refusal to be fingerprinted, an infraction. Bond was set at $20,000.
