Police told the Hour that 46-year-old John Reynolds took the money from the student activity fund over the course of several years. The Board of Education contacted police last April when financial irregularities were brought to their attention, and an investigation was launched, the Hour reported.
The Norwalk Police Department's Fraud Unit handled the investigation, which involved forensic accounting, and secured an arrest warrant for Reynolds, according to the Hour. He was charged Wednesday first-degree larceny, and his bond was set at $100,000.
Last year, Reynolds announced that he was stepping down from Jefferson Magnet School to become headmaster of Pear Tree Point School in Darien.
Police told the Hour that the investigation is ongoing. The fund that Reynolds is accused of stealing from was used for student activities, as well as special programs, the Hour reported.
