Officers patrolling Oyster Shell Park at 10:10 p.m. saw several people in a parked vehicle, police said.

When officers approached, they smelled the heavy odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle, police said.

Officers saw rolling papers in the ash tray and a backpack in the back seat, police said. The backpack belonged to Caleb Velez, who consented to a search, police said.

Upon searching the backpack, officers found a glass jar containing marijuana, rolling papers and a pill bottle, police said.

Officers found .14 grams of marijuana and 5 1/2 Xanax pills in the backpack, which were not in their proper container, police said.

Police charged Velez with possession of a controlled substance or less than 4 ounces of marijuana; illegal manufacture, distribution, sale or prescription of a controlled substance; possession of a hallucinogen or less than 4 ounces of marijuana; and illegal possession of a controlled substance near a school, police said.

Velez was released on a promise to appear and issued a court date of June 27, police said.
