In a released posted on the department's Facebook page, spokesman Lt. Terry Blake said that after examining evidence, the Special Victims Unit and the Detective Bureau raised questions about the teen's story and determined Saturday morning that the teen had fabricated the story.
Police did not say whether the teen was facing any charges in connection with the incident, which brought a massive police response to the area behind the Rowayton Woods complex and caused the lockdown of three neighboring schools.
Responding officers conducted an exhaustive search of the area, including in the neighborhood, condo complex, near the schools and even along the Metro-North train tracks. The search continued for a few years after the complaint was made at about 10 a.m. Friday, police said.
The community should be assured that there was never any threat or danger to residents in the area, police said.
The teen had reported she had been jogging on a wooded path behind the Rowayton Woods Condominiums on Highland Avenue when a man jumped out from behind a tree, held her down, fondled her, and scratched her with a compact-type mirror, police said. She reported fighting the man off and then fleeing into a nearby condominium unit that belonged to a friend, police said.
