Norwalk Police Planning DUI Checkpoints This Spring

NORWALK, Conn. – Patrons leaving the bars and restaurants in South Norwalk beginning Saturday night should be particularly careful not to drink excessively because members of the Norwalk Police Department will be out in force manning a sobriety checkpoint on West Avenue.

The department periodically conducts such checkpoints as part of the “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.” program, which was launched nationally late last year.

To date, Norwalk police have made more than 20 driving under the influence arrests, and issued more than 200 impaired driving infractions as a result of the initiative.

“The crackdown campaign runs through the Labor Day weekend, and Norwalk officers will continue to be out in full force to help get more impaired drivers off local roadways,” said Sgt. Lisa Cotto in a statement.

Since 2008, more than 12,000 people have been killed in automobile or motorcycle crashes where at least one of the parties had a blood alcohol concentration of .08 grams per deciliter or higher, which is considered legally drunk in all 50 states, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Saturday’s checkpoint will begin at 7 p.m. and run through the night, police said. For more information on the program, visit www.stopimpaireddriving.com.
