Police told the Hour that at around 8:15 p.m. on Monday, a man walked into the World of Beverages on Main Avenue and brandished a large butcher knife at the owner, who was eating dinner with his wife. The armed man demanded the money in the register, and left with about $170 along with a 30-pack of beer, the Hour reported.
Police arrived on scene and found a 14-inch knife across the street from the store, according to the Hour. They also looked at surveillance video from the liquor store and nearby businesses, and were able to identify the suspect as 29-year-old James McGarty of Norwalk, according to the Hour.
Police interviewed McGarty, who told officers that he had been drinking and smoking marijuana with PCP, and had gotten in an argument with family members that night, according to the Hour. He left his Ward Street home with the knife and was on his way to McDonald's when he decided to rob the liquor store, the Hour reported.
McGarty was charged with first-degree robbery, carrying a dangerous weapon and sixth-degree larceny. He was held on a $100,000 bond and was arraigned on Friday.
