Norwalk Man Accused Of Hitting Alleged Prostitute

NORWALK, Conn. – A Norwalk man was charged with assaulting an alleged prostitute Monday over whether he had to use a condom. The woman was charged with prostitution.

Robert Mednez, 38, reported to police Monday morning that he had been robbed by a woman in a parking lot on Chestnut Street. He said she had grabbed $20 out of his hand and that he lost her after a brief chase.

Police said they received a second call from Mendez later that morning reporting that he was with the woman on Laura Street. Police said that when officers responded they found Mendez arguing with a woman, later identified as Ariel Barfield, 22. Police also reported that Mendez appeared to be moderately intoxicated.

Barfield told officers Mendez approached her earlier in the day and started a conversation, according to police. They quoted her as saying she agreed to have sex with him for $20. She also told him he had to wear a condom, which he did not want to do, police said.

Barfield denied taking Mendez’s money, according to police. She told officers Mendez had hit her on the face, and police reported that she had superficial cuts on her hands and face. She refused medical attention, police said.

Mendez was charged with patronizing a prostitute and third-degree assault, both misdemeanors. Barfield was charged with prostitution, also a misdemeanor.
