Norwalk Firefighters Go To Great Depths To Rescue Ducklings From Drain

NORWALK, Conn. — A mother duck and local residents are giving out a shout-out to members of Norwalk Fire Department Ladder Co. #1 who came to the rescue of 11 baby ducklings.

The little ducks fell down a storm drain on Sunday afternoon on Ponus Avenue, greatly upsetting their mother.

Members of Norwalk Fire Department Ladder Co. #1 safely and successfully rescued the ducklings from the depth of the drain and returned to the mother, who watched attentively the entire time.

"I saw the mama duck stressing out by the storm drain as I drove by," said Daily Voice reader and local Realtor Theresa Roth. "I heard the chirping of her babies and called the police."

The rescue crew was led by fire department Lt. Nick Giancaspro.

"Fortunately, Lt. Giancaspro and his men responded quickly and the family was reunited," said Roth, who is with Higgins Group Real Estate in South Norwalk. "With the help of a neighbor and her gardening buckets, the ducklings were successfully transported away from the road and reunited with their mama."
