NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk first responders rescued a man who fell into the Norwalk River on Monday afternoon.
Norwalk combined dispatch received a call at about 2 p.m. that a man had fallen into the river in front of 601 Merritt 7. A passerby had heard the man's yells for help and called 911.
The man fell near an office complex along the Norwalk River at a point where the river is narrow, fast-moving and about 6 to 10 inches deep. The water temperature was about 40 degrees, Norwalk fire officials said.
Police, EMS and firefighters arrived on the scene in about four minutes and saw a man sitting on the side of the riverbank being assisted by a civilian. Firefighters had cold water survivor suits on and made their way across the river to attend to the man.
The man had suffered a head injury after falling 12 feet down the riverbank, fire officials said. He was loaded into a stokes basket, a carrying device used to remove people from confined spaces or slopes.
A police officer and firefighters hauled him up the embankment, where he was attended to by Norwalk Hospital paramedics.
The man had been walking his dog along a trail and slipped, fire officials said. The dog was also removed from the riverbank and handed over to the man's friend.
The man's condition was unknown as of 4 p.m. He was talking to rescuers while on scene, fire officials said.
