Stanley Paez-Caraballo, 20, of the Bronx, N.Y., was charged with fifth-degree larceny, credit card theft, criminal attempt, illegal use of credit card, receiving goods obtained illegally, unlawful reproduction of a credit card, possession of narcotics, possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana and failure to keep drugs in their original container. He was held on $10,000 bond and will appear in court Oct. 13.
Paez-Caraballo purchased two PlayStations online at a value of $799.98 and went to the Best Buy on Connecticut Avenue Sunday afternoon to pick them up, police said.
He handed a credit card to the employee ringing him up, who noticed that the card did not look right. According to police, the card resembled a prepaid credit card, which does not normally have raised numbers, but the numbers on this card were raised. A manager called Visa to check the credit card number, and discovered that the number was not valid, according to police.
Paez-Caraballo was detained until police arrived. When officers spoke to him, he admitted that the credit card was fake, according to police reports.
When he was searched, police found a small amount of marijuana, as well as a hydrocodone pill, police said. He was then taken into custody.
