NORWALK, Conn. The bullets were flying Sunday evening in South Norwalk, but the only things damaged were two cars and the nerves of a family that happened to be in one of them, Norwalk Police say.
Police found eight small-caliber shell casings in the middle of Woodward Avenue and arrested one man, who is thought to have been the lone shooter, Lt. Praveen John said. They did not find a gun.
Police responding to the 7:38 p.m. call of shots fired at 81 Woodward Ave. saw kids walking on both sides of the street, in different directions, John said. A witness walked up to the police supervisor on the scene and pointed to Jonas Labaze, 19, as the shooter, John said. He was arrested.
A parked vehicle had been hit in the hail of gunfire, John said. A family a mother, a father and a child had just left the C&S Grocery on the on the corner of Meadow Street and gotten into their minivan when the rear window was shot out.
A witness said a group had gotten out of a vehicle and one of them fired a gun, John said.
At least 10 cruisers were parked on Woodward Street as police searched for evidence. "Anyone that was in the vicinity was searched," John said. "There were a lot of people that were in the area that were stopped by police."
Labaze gave police two addresses, one in Bridgeport and the other in the Roodner Court housing complex on Ely Avenue. He was charged with two counts of reckless endangerment first degree, a class A misdemeanor, and two counts of breach of peace second degree, a class B misdemeanor. He was held on $100,000 bond.
The incident is under investigation.
John said there is always a "high police presence" in the area. "I was there a month ago, on a high-profile type patrol," he said. "One officer recovered a handgun under a wheel well of a car."
