NORWALK, Conn. The pit bull that attacked a Norwalk man on Hanford Place Monday evening will likely be euthanized, police said. The dog has a history of violence, officers said.
The dog, Samantha, was being walked on Hanford Place Monday when it broke free and attacked a 60-year-old man on the street. Neighbors' efforts to get the dog to stop failed. Police arrived and said it took four shots from a stun gun before the dog finally went down. Police said a small black pit bull was also involved in the attack.
The dog broke free of the stun gun prongs and ran back into its house, where police quarantined it. The dogs owner, Nicole Hoyt, 33, told police she could no longer control the animal and signed custody over to the police. The dog was placed in the pound, where police said it is being tested for rabies and would likely be put down Tuesday.
The victim of Mondays attack received serious injuries, police said. His ankle was ripped open to the bone, and he had puncture wounds on his left arm and leg and was bleeding profusely. He was transported to the hospital.
Hoyt was cited for owning or harboring a dog to create a nuisance, and allowing a dog to roam free.
This is not the first incident Samantha has been involved in. In May, police arrested Valmond Elmore, 35, of 5 Hanford Place for allegedly stabbing Samantha. He told police he acted in self-defense, but he was charged with cruelty to animals, disorderly conduct and third-degree assault. His case is still pending.
In early July, Samantha attacked her owner and another man. She was quarantined in a bedroom and shot with a tranquilizer dart. She was taken to the Norwalk Animal Shelter, where she was kept under quarantine until July 22 before being returned to her owner.
