Dog Left In Car; Norwalk Man Charged

NORWALK, Conn. – A Norwalk man received a misdemeanor summons for cruelty to animals Tuesday after leaving a dog in his car while he did business at City Hall, Norwalk Police say. The car was parked in the sunlight and the temperature was 85 degrees, Sgt. Lee Young said.

The barking brown and white shih tzu was found at 10:37 a.m. by an officer who was at City Hall on another matter, Young said. The windows in the car were up and there was no water in the car, he said. A passerby said the dog had been there for 10-15 minutes. The officer checked his smartphone and found it was 85 degrees.

Luis Chavez, 36, of 17 Windward Road, returned shortly thereafter with his two children, Young said. He said he had been inside for 15 minutes and thought he had left a window open in the car. The dog had been left in the car because it barks in public places.

While the outside temperature was 85 degrees, the temperature inside a vehicle could be much higher, Young said.
