NORWALK, Conn. -- A Bridgeport man was arrested and charged with trying to break into Village Bagels in Norwalk before employees fought him off last October in an early morning break-in, according to police.

Angel Rodriguez, 47, was charged with first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree burglary, possession of burglar's tools, and sixth-degree larceny. He was held on $75,000 bond and will appear in court March 13.

The arrest stems from an incident on Oct. 18 at Village Bagels on Westport Avenue. At 3:12 a.m., employees were making bagels when two men kicked in the glass on the front door and attempted to gain entry to the shop, according to police. Employees chased the two men off with a bagel-making tool, and they got into a red pickup truck and fled the scene, police said.

State police spotted the suspects' truck on I-95 northbound and started pursuing it. The truck got off the highway and was followed by officers from Fairfield and Bridgeport but managed to evade police. The truck was later found abandoned, and police were not able to locate the suspects at that time.

Police were able to collect DNA evidence from the truck, which matched Rodriguez, according to police reports. He was taken into custody Tuesday at adult probation in Bridgeport.
