The swing ride that malfunctioned is owned by Stewart Amusements, based in Trumbull. Stewart Amusements reinspected all the other rides at the Oyster Festival, and they were allowed to reopen, according to the Norwalk Seaport Association. The festival continued until its regular closing time Sunday evening, police said.
Original story; NORWALK, Conn. - Thirteen children were injured Sunday when a swing ride in the kids cove of the Norwalk Oyster Festival lost power and malfunctioned, police said.
"A "swing" ride in the Kids Cove apparently lost power, causing the children on the ride to forcefully fall to the ground, police said. There were multiple injuries as a result," Norwalk Police announced on their Facebook Page.
Most of the injuries were minor, police said, and the children were treated at the scene and released.
"Several were more seriously injured, including two which appeared to be the most serious. The injured were transported to Norwalk, Stamford and Bridgeport hospitals. Parents were with all children," police said. "We are waiting for the state fire marshal's office to respond to conduct the investigation, as they inspect and oversee the companies that provide these services. Discussions are now ongoing as to whether to reopen the other rides. That decision is not within the police purview. Officers have been assigned to assist families as needed."
A Norwalk Hospital official said she could not comment on how many people were being treated at the facility.
