Walter Bates, 90, Retired Teacher, Of Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. – Walter C. Bates of Norwalk died Sunday, Aug. 12, at Aurora Senior Living of Norwalk. He was 90. 

Born May 29, 1922, in Stamford, he was the son of Walter A. and Jessie Pierce Bates. He graduated from Darien High School in 1941 and continued at the State University of New York. He served in the Army during World War II.  

Bates later obtained a master's degree at Connecticut State Teachers College. He had a 60-year teaching career in California, Torrington, Conn., and Darien. Bates was active in the Connecticut State Teachers Association. After retirement, he became a member of the Lifetime Learners Institution.  

He is survived by a brother, Franklin P. Bates, of Darien; two sisters, Myrtle Bates Williams, of Boulder, Colo., and Alice Bates Stevens, of Loudonville, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. Bates was predeceased by a brother, Elwood A. Bates; and two sisters, Beatrice Bates Sullivan and Florence Bates Wyland.  

Funeral services will be held at a later date at East Cemetery in Rowe, Mass. Collins Funeral Home in Norwalk is handling arrangements.
