Varina Steuert, 62, Of Darien

DARIEN, Conn. – Varina Mason Steuert died Aug. 24 at her home in Darien of  lymphoma. She was 62. 

Steuert was a former director and past treasurer of the Darien Community Association.

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Steuert was born Aug. 2, 1950. She graduated from Pine Manor College and Boston University. She received a master's in business administration from Columbia University and attended the master's degree program in history of the decorative arts and design at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum.

Steuert served on the board of directors of the Stamford Symphony for many years. She commissioned guest compositions for the symphony and hosted many fund-raising events. 

For 18 years, Steuert performed bi-annual concerts with the Duo Piano Group of the Darien Community Association, where she served as treasurer and as a director. She was a director of the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the National Society of Colonial Dames of New York City and was a fund-raiser for the Westport Country Playhouse.  

Steuert was a supporter of the Metropolitan Opera, as well as a member of the Colony Club of New York City, Garden Club and Tokeneke Club of Darien and Ponte Vedra Club in Florida. She was an active member of the Noroton Presbyterian Church of Darien.

Before devoting herself to her family and artistic interests, Steuert worked for the Charter Company in Jacksonville, Washington, D.C., and New York City. She assisted the chairman in hosting visits from international royalty to the U.S. She also served as a director of Intrepid Capital Corporation and Ballynahinch Castle Hotel Inc. of County Galway, Ireland.

Steuert is survived by her husband of 31 years, Joseph J. Steuert; two sons, Raymond Michael Steuert and Joseph John Steuert V; two stepchildren, Elizabeth Steuert (Sebastiano) Riva and Douglas R. Steuert; her parents, Raymond Knight and Minerva Rogers Mason; a sister, Marcy Mason (Tom) Moody; and a brother, Raymond Knight (Kim) Mason Jr.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Fla.
