Ruth Gardner, 92, Longtime Norwalk Resident

NORWALK, Conn. – Ruth Gardner, a former longtime Norwalk resident, died Aug. 14 at her home in Virginia Beach, Va. She was 92. 

Born May 20, 1920, in Wolf Lake, Ill., Gardner was the daughter of Grace and Luther Sielert. She lived in Dupo, Ill., as a child and later taught at Dupo High School. She attended Compton College in California and completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois, where she majored in mathematics. 

She married Larry Gardner and lived in the Chicago area and later in Norwalk, where she raised seven boys, Larry, Joe, Chris, Greg, Peter, Michael and Steve, and six girls, Pat, Pam, Mary, Valerie, Judy and Jane. 

Gardner was married for 53 years until Larry's death in 1996. In addition to her children, she is survived by 22 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a sister, Laurabelle Miller. 

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Church of the Holy Family in Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Bayside Chapel. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a local food pantry or to Food for the Poor www.foodforthepoor.org.
