He was the son of Harold and Mary Bredice Anderson and the husband of Elsie Hanzlik Anderson.
He was an alumnus of Norwalk High School and worked for the U.S. Post Office in Norwalk as chief accountant until his retirement in 1977. He had a long military career, serving over 33 years in the Army and National Guard.
He enlisted at the beginning of World War II and earned his commission as a second lieutenant at Fort Benning, Ga. He then served in the Pacific Theatre with the 31st and 24th Infantry Divisions and was awarded the Bronze Star, The Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Army of Occupation Medal for Japan and Germany, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Defense Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Upon his discharge from active service, he joined the Connecticut Army National Guard’s 963 Field Artillery Battalion in Norwalk. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict and sent to Augsburg, Germany, as an operations officer.
He was a member of the Norwalk Catholic Club, American Legion Post 12, Norwalk Quartette Club, Norwalk Power Squadron, National Association of Postal Supervisors, the VFW and the Blind Veteran’s Association and was active in the retired Men’s Club at the Norwalk Senior Center.
He is survived by his sister, Marion Anderson Babinski; niece Judith (Edward) Cerulli; nephew Jack and Maxine Hanzlik of San Rafael, Calif.; 12 grandnieces and nephews; longtime friend and companion Evelyn Varga of Fairfield; and longtime friend Donald Linner of Norwalk.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by Kenneth Cerulli.
His family will receive friends Tuesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Philip Church, 1 Father Conlon Place, Norwalk. Interment will be held privately at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
The family requests contributions be made to one’s favorite charity in lieu of flowers.
