NORWALK, Conn. – Gerardo L. Conte, a 52-year resident of Norwalk, died Dec. 22 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 95.
Born June 1, 1917, in Barano Di'Ischi, Italy, he was the son of Gennaro and Maria Rose D'Iorio Conte. He was raised in Italy, where he attended schools and later served in the Navy for seven years during World War II.
Conte was a retired excavation worker in construction. He enjoyed making wine and spending time with his family. He was also an avid gardener.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Emma Conte, of Norwalk; a daughter, Rose (Salvatore) Mattera, of Norwalk; a son, Gennaro Conte, of Norwalk; and two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
Conte was predeceased by three brothers, Vincenzo, Carlo and Adolf; and four sisters, Carmel Faugno, Iolanda Conte, Giuseppina D'Iorio and Clotilta Tiretti.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home and Crematory in Norwalk. A procession will leave the funeral home at 9 a.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Parish in Norwalk. Entombment will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Norwalk.
