Smarz was born and raised in Hungary, she worked as a nurse, before coming to the U.S. where she held various jobs over the years. Smarz is survived by her daughter, Andrea Makepeace (Dave) of Danbury; and a grandson. She was predeceased by her husband, John Smarz; and siblings, Judy, Zoltan and Joseph,
