Bob Michalak, 83, Former Norwalk Engineer

NORWALK, Conn. – Bob Anthony Michalak, a former Norwalk resident, died July 24 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, N.Y. He was 83. 

Before moving to Rhinebeck 15 years ago, Michalak and his wife, Cecelia, were 30-year residents of Norwalk. He was an active parishioner of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Norwalk and a member of the Shore and Country Club. 

He was born May 1, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio, to Vincent and Cecilia Tucholski Michalak. He graduated from the University of Toledo and received a master's degree in electrical engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic.  

On April 24, 1959, Michalak married Cecilia J. McGowan in Roslyn, N.Y. Upon graduation, he worked as an electrical engineer at Sperry Gyroscope in Lake Success, N.Y. for 18 years. Michalak retired from Dell Electronics in Valhalla, N.Y. after 30 years and remained as a consultant until the time of his death. 

He was an accomplished athlete and Detroit Tigers fan. Michalak was a member of his high school baseball team and continued playing softball throughout college and with Sperry Gyroscope.

Later in life, he enjoyed tennis and golf and was most recently a member of the Edgewood Golf Club. Michalak and his wife also enjoyed playing duplicate bridge throughout their marriage.

He is survived by his wife, Cecilia; a son, John (Cindy) Michalak, of West Hartford, Conn.; three daughters, Claudia (Norman) Stern, of Melville, N.Y., Joan (Michael) Confoy, of Ashburn, Va. and Bernadette (Mike) Lecza, of Durham, Conn.; six and grandchildren. Two sisters, Phyllis Young and Joan Szymanski, predeceased him.  

Calling hours are from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home in Rhinebeck. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Church in Rhinebeck. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Rhinecliff, N.Y.
