The investigation into the death of Westport resident Cindy D'Aiuto continued Tuesday night with Police Capt. Sam Arciola saying it was still unclear whether her death was a tragic accident or the result of foul play.
"At this time nothing has been ruled out, and the detectives are looking closely at her whereabouts over the past day," Arciola said in a statement.
D'Aiuto, 48, who lived at 5 Canal St., was found lying in the snow in the rear parking lot of 166 Kings Highway N. early Tuesday by a newspaper carrier for the Connecticut Post.
"It was terrible," the unidentified carrier told the Post. "The only dead body I've seen before was my grandfather. To see this situation -- I'm shaking. I'm still trying to get over it."
D'Aiuto reportedly was found wearing pink pajamas and slippers. But because it's an ongoing investigation, Arciola could not confirm that information. Although it is unclear what happened, Arciola said her death was classified as suspicious because her body was found in an "isolated" parking lot.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday at the state medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death.
The Connecticut State Police Major Crime Unit has been called in to assist with the investigation. The area of Kings Highway North from Main Street to Canal Street was limited to westbound traffic due of the ongoing investigation.
The Westport Police Department asks that anyone who had contact with D'Aiuto within 24 hours of the time her body was found contact the Detective Bureau at (203) 341-6080.
