If you think your zodiac sign is Scorpio, think again. News of a 13th sign known as Ophiuchus has hit social media websites, causing an outpouring of panicked tweets and Facebook statuses from people whose sign seemly changed overnight.
But has your sign really changed from Scorpio to Libra, or from Libra to Virgo? According to Parke Kunkle, a Minnesota astronomy professor, the answer is "Yes."
"When [astrologers] say that the sun is in Pisces, it's really not in Pisces," Kunkle, a board member of the Minnesota Planetarium Society, told the Star-Tribune, a Minneapolis newspaper that apparently started the commotion.
As explained in the article, this shift occurred because the moon's gravitational pull created a change in the Earth's "wobble." This caused the original alignment of the stars to be off by about a month. With Ophiuchus accounting for the additional month, the following are the "real" zodiac dates:
Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16 Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11 Pisces: March 11 - April 18 Aries: April 18 - May 13 Taurus: May 13 - June 21 Gemini: June 21 - July 20 Cancer: July 20 - Aug. 10 Leo: Aug. 10 - Sept. 16 Virgo: Sept. 16 - Oct. 30 Libra: Oct. 30 - Nov. 23 Scorpio: Nov. 23 - Nov. 29 Ophiuchus: Nov. 29 - Dec. 17 Sagittarius: Dec. 17 - Jan. 20
But according to CNN, your sign hasn't changed. In Western culture, most people adhere to the tropical zodiac, which follows seasons instead of constellations, the article says. This means nothing has changed. However, if you follow the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the constellations and is popular in the East, the changes are legit.
