What To Do During an Earthquake

What should you do if the earth keeps on swaying?

When you're indoors, stay there, the experts advise. Get under a sturdy table, or cover your head and crouch in an inside corner of the building. Move away from windows or anything that could fall, such as a bookcase or chandelier.

If you're in bed, hold on and cover your head with a pillow. Stay inside until the shaking stops. Out in the street, you're in danger of being hit by falling debris.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says that most earthquake injuries occur when people inside buildings try to move to another location or go outside. Do not use elevators.

If you're outside already, get as far away from walls, streetlights and utility poles as possible. If you're driving, stop as soon as you can – away from overpasses, utility wires and, if possible, trees.
