Westport Shooting Suspect Caught on Video

WESTPORT, Conn. — A suspect in Thursday night's fatal shooting of a Westport jewelry manufacturer was caught on video surveillance cameras, police say.

Westport resident Yekutiel Zeevi, 65, owner of Y.Z. Jewelry Manufacturing , was killed Thursday night at his 413 Post Road East business in what police described as a "targeted" shooting." Also shot was Ronen Konfino, 48, of New York City, who was described as a business associate of Zeevi's. Konfino was in stable condition Friday at Norwalk hospital, where he is in being interviewed by state and local police, Westport Police Chief Dale Call said Friday afternoon.

The following description of the suspect has been released:

A white male, appearing to be in his 40s, three or four days of facial hair growth, short salt and pepper colored hair, approximately 5’ 10 inches tall, wearing a black driving cap, black framed glasses, blue jeans, brown cowboy boots, and having a blue or green two tone jacket with a light colored stripe.

The suspect was also believed to have driven a blue four-door “boxy” type car, unknown make or license plate at this time.

Call said the suspect had met with Zeevi and Konfino on Wednesday looking to buy or sell diamonds, and had scheduled another appointment with them Thursday night. Police believe the suspect met with the men after seeing one of Zeevi's weekly ads about buying/selling diamonds.

"It's a tragedy. There's no other way of looking at it," Call said. "It's nothing any community, whether New York City or Westport, wants to have happen."

The last murder to happen in Westport was in 1996, police said, and that was a murder/suicide case.

At this time, Call said police don't know whether the suspect was looking to buy or sell diamonds, and are not sure what was stolen from the business. They also don't know what time the suspect was scheduled to meet with Zeevi and Konfino Thursday, but he was captured on video going in and out of the businesses between 9 and 10 p.m.

Investigators are currently going through video surveillance from the office complex and that of nearby businesses for a better visual of the suspect.

The Westport Police Department is asking anyone who may have seen a person matching this description in the area of Compo Shopping Center between 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., Thursday to call the Westport Police Department Detective Bureau at 203-341-6080.
