Fire Destroys Boat on Long Island Sound

WESTPORT, Conn. – A man onboard a 47-foot boat that caught fire Saturday night on Long island Sound in Westport was rescued by Westport Police Capt. Sam Arciola and friend Don Saunders, Westport Police Lt. John Pitoniak reported.

Arciola, who was off-duty, was fishing on his private boat with Saunders when they noticed smoke and flames coming from another boat nearby shortly after 8 p.m. After calling 911, Arciola and Saunders helped the man onto their boat before his became fully engulfed in flames, Pitoniak said. The man was not injured and was escorted to Compo Marina.

The incident happened off Cedar Point. Westport Marine Police, assisted by Westport firefighters, responded to the call. The Norwalk police and fire departments as well as the U.S. Coast Guard provided additional assistance.

Emergency responders were unable to put out the flames, and the fire self-extinguished as the boat burned down to the waterline. Arrangements were being made to salvage the boat, which was based out of Cove Marina in Norwalk. The Westport Police Marine Division was investigating.
