Westport Grads Missing in Libya

Westport natives Tyler Hicks and Lynsey Addario are among four New York Times journalists reported missing while on assignment in Libya, the newspaper reported Wednesday.

Hicks and Addario, both photographers for the Times, and reporters Anthony Shadid and Stephen Farrell haven't been heard from since Tuesday morning. At the Times, journalists in war zones and areas of conflict are expected to check in regularly.

The paper said it received unconfirmed reports that members of its reporting team had been taken by Libyan government forces.

"We have talked with officials of the Libyan government in Tripoli, and they tell us they are attempting to ascertain the whereabouts of our journalists," Bill Keller, executive editor at the Times, told the paper. "We are grateful to the Libyan government for their assurance that if our journalists were captured they would be released promptly and unharmed."

Hicks, 1988 graduate of Staples, and Addario, a 1991 Staples graduate, have both worked extensively in the Middle East and Africa.
